Google Ads
Do you drive website visits using Google Ads?
Paid advertising on Google search
Google Ads is a paid advertising platform for Google, the biggest search engine out there. With paid ads, you can display your website higher on the search page. Let’s say you run a hotel in Capetown. When somebody searches ‘hotel Capetown’, your website might not get a high ranking and is not seen by most visitors. With Google Ads, you have a chance to display your ad higher on the page.
Create your own campaigns
In the Google Ads dashboard, you can set up campaigns for every search term you would like. For instance ‘Hotel Capetown’, ‘Lodging Capetown’ or ‘Family hotel Capetown’, depending on the sort of accommodation you offer. You can also define what country you want to target and what budget you want to spend.
You pay per click on your ad, and costs depend on the competition there is on this same keyword. For instance, more companies want to be found on the keyword ‘hotel’ which makes it more expensive than a more specific term that contains a specific city area, facility, or brand name.
While this means you should choose your keywords wisely, Google Ads can be an effective way to drive potential guests to your website and generate more bookings.
Questions to ask
Would advertise on Google Ads drive you more bookings?
What countries and/or languages would you target?
What keywords do you want to be found on?
What is the average order value coming from your website, and what would you maximally spend on a transaction?

Pro tip: When is Google Ads successful?
To measure the success of Google Ads you can set a ROAS: Return on ad spend. This measures the amount of gross revenue your hotel earns for each dollar spent on digital advertising, such as Google Ads. A simple formula used to calculate ROAS is:
While there's no "right" answer, a common ROAS benchmark in the hospitality industry is somewhere between a 4:1 and 10:1 ratio — $4 - $10 revenue to $1 in ad spend.
