Google Search Engine Page Results
Before we dig in we highlight a few basics on what we see on Google.
1. Organic Results versus Advertising
When we search on Google we may get very different types of result pages. The first big distinction is between advertising and 'organic' results: which websites are shown on top organically is calculated strictly algorithmically, and not affected by advertiser payments.
To show up high in the organic search results can be influenced by relevant content on your site, making sure your site is technically sound and that there is 'buzz' around your brand/site. This sounds simple, however, it has grown into a science and a complete industry has been built around it: SEO, Search Engine Optimisation.
2. Local Search Results
SEO is complicated, getting into the local search results is easy. When searching for something that sounds local: 'order pizza' or 'booking a hotel room', Google is likely to show you the results from Google Business (the same results appear on Google Maps). Check out the section on this site how to get started.
3. When I looking for my business I am #1 on Google
That is very likely. Google's algorithm takes into account what your location is as well as your search history. You probably visit your own site regularly and that's why it may rank high when you search. Search results are different depending on e.g. who is searching, the location where from and what device is being used. No two search results are the same.
Can people find you in search engines?
You know that search engines are a big tool to find whatever it is you are looking for. There are several search engines, but Google is by far best known. They have over 85% of market share of all search engines. Other search engines are Bing, Yahoo! and duckduckgo. Since Google is the biggest one we will focus on this brand.
So when your customer is using search they will most likely start with Google (even though big brands like Tripadvisor and booking.com are eating into this market share as a staring point to search for travel options).
The results Google will show are not just random results, they are determined by the Google algorithm. No one (except for Google) knows the exact factors, however, specialists can tweak your site to get higher positions in the search results by something we call Search Engine Optimisation, also known as SEO. As a measurement we can say: the higher you are in the results, the more likely the customer will find to your website.
